Howard and ending up at Ft. McHenry. We had the opportunity to see Baltimore by speed boat today aboard the Seadog Cruises. Our guide told us lots of facts about Baltimore as we headed out towards open waters. Once we got a bit further our the speedboat portion began and we were getting splashed from all sides. We were able to see Fort McHenry, the Domino Sugar Building, lots of boats and much more! Today we took a tour of Antietam Battlefield since this September marks the 150th Anniversary of the bloodiest day in America's history. Ask your children about the "upside down" canons and what they symbolized. We were also able to see the War Correspondent's Memorial at Gathland State Park. The Appalachian Trail goes right through the base of the memorial and we were able to see a few of the hikerso n their journey! Today we went to Charlottesville, VA to visit Monticello. We learned many interesting facts about Thomas Jefferson as we toured his home. Thomas Jefferson designed his own home and was a man who was ahead of his time. Pictured left we are standing in front of Jefferson's home know as "the house of curiosity". Today the students explored Baltimore by finding hidden geocaches around Patterson Park, Butchers Hill, and Little Italy. Students took turns holding a hand held GPS while leading the rest of the group to the secret hiding spots. This is a fun activity that we will carry out for the remainder of B.E.E.S. as we explore more parts of Baltimore and our road trips on Thursdays. Featured left is our first cache of the day! Today we started the day with a math problem of the day and defined our weekly vocabulary words by using context clues. The students were challenged to write three of their words in meaningful sentences in their journals. We visited the Inner Harbor and check out some the the ships like the Lightship Chesapeake and the USS Constellation. We stopped in front of the World Trade Center and visited the new 9/11 memorial. After our Inner Harbor tour, we had lunch and cooled off in the fountains. |
